James D. Fearon is the Theodore and Frances Geballe Professor in Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences and Professor of Political Science. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies, affiliated with the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) and the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC). Fearon holds a Ph.D. (1992), M.A. (1991), and A.B. (1985) in Political Science and Economics from the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University, respectively.
His research focuses on civil and interstate war, ethnic conflict, democratic accountability, and the political economy of violence. Notable contributions include theories on civil war onset, conflict bargaining, and the costs of interpersonal violence. Fearon has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (2012) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2002).
Current work explores democratization in Myanmar, nuclear weapons policy, and the long-term persistence of armed conflict. He has advised on international development projects, including field experiments in post-conflict Liberia. Fearon’s grants and awards include studies on governance, climate-conflict linkages, and aid effectiveness.
