Sarah Sobieraj is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Tufts University, with affiliations to the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the Film and Media Studies Program. Her research focuses on US political culture, digital abuse, public discourse, and media sociology. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University at Albany (2002), an MA from American University (1997), and a BA in Political Science from SUNY Geneseo (1993).
Her work bridges media studies and political sociology, addressing topics like online harassment of women, political incivility, and mediated information environments. Notable publications include Credible Threat (2021), The Outrage Industry (2016), and co-edited volumes such as the Oxford Handbook of Digital Media Sociology (2022). Her research has been featured in major media outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post, and NPR.
Awards include the Roderick P. Hart Outstanding Book Award and the American Sociological Association’s Best Book Award. She teaches courses on media, culture, qualitative research methods, and digital extremism.
