Ethan Zuckerman is an Associate Professor of Public Policy, Communication, and Information at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Director of the Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and studied at the University of Ghana as a Fulbright Scholar. His research focuses on media as a tool for social change, technology’s role in international development, and activism through new media technologies.
Zuckerman co-founded Global Voices (showcasing citizen media globally) and Geekcorps (an IT volunteer nonprofit in West Africa). He has been a Fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center and contributed to outlets like The Atlantic and Wired. His books include Rewire: Digital Cosmopolitans in the Age of Connection and Mistrust: Why Losing Faith in Institutions Provides the Tools to Transform Them.
His recent work emphasizes digital public infrastructure, algorithmic transparency, and civic technology. He explores how platforms can foster trust and accountability, particularly addressing issues like misinformation, online harassment, and equitable access. Zuckerman advocates for reimagining the internet as a tool for inclusive civic engagement.
