Ethan Zuckerman is an Associate Professor of Public Policy, Information, and Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Director of the Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure. He is a Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. His work focuses on media’s role in social change, internet governance, and digital activism.
Zuckerman co-founded Global Voices, an international citizen media platform, and previously directed MIT’s Center for Civic Media. He also founded Geekcorps, a technology volunteer organization in West Africa. His research spans censorship countermeasures, social media’s impact on democracy, and digital public infrastructure.
Key projects include Media Cloud (quantitative media analysis), the DDoS research project (cybersecurity threats to media), and advocacy for open internet policies. He has authored two books: *Mistrust: How Losing Trust in Institutions Provides Tools to Transform Them* (2021) and *Rewire: Digital Cosmopolitans in the Age of Connection* (2013).
Zuckerman’s recent work critiques AI’s political biases and advocates for equitable digital infrastructures. He frequently publishes in outlets like *The Atlantic* and speaks at global conferences on technology and democracy.
