Professor Sarah Markham is a distinguished saxophonist and educator affiliated with the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies, where she serves as a Saxophone Tutor. She holds academic positions at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, Leeds Conservatoire, and universities including York and Durham. A Yamaha and Vandoren Performing Artist, her career spans over 25 years of performances across Europe, North America, and the Far East, with notable engagements at festivals like the International Greek Saxophone Festival and the World Saxophone Congress. She has collaborated with composers such as Mark Zadro and James Rae, leading to commissioned works like Several World and Sonata in Eb.
Education includes a degree and Performer's Diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music, followed by a Master's in Music Performance from the University of Massachusetts, USA. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes personal development, technical mastery, and exploration of diverse musical genres. She has served as Artistic Director for Saxophone Classics (2009–2015), the University of Huddersfield Saxophone Day, and the Yorkshire Saxophone Choir.
Research Interests: Sarah advocates for new music, specializing in contemporary compositions and extended saxophone techniques. She actively collaborates with composers to explore experimental methods like slap tongue, multiphonics, and harmonic manipulation. Her work bridges classical, jazz, and improvisational traditions, mentoring students in creating individual artistic voices.
Awards: Recipients of her Markham Awards since 2013 include Oliver Pritchard Jones (2024) and Kezia Colton (2024), among others. These awards honor outstanding graduating students and personal achievements, supported by Yamaha, Vandoren, and Saxtet Publications. The Ralph Markham Award, established in 2018, commemorates her father's legacy of curiosity and support for music.
Advising & Grants: As a mentor, Sarah has guided over 20 students in their careers, many transitioning to conservatoires or professional music roles. Her teaching spans private instruction, ensemble coaching, and institutional consultancy roles. She has received grants indirectly through Yamaha artist sponsorships and record label collaborations.
Labs/Teams: Sarah is associated with ensembles like the Adelphi Saxophone Quartet, Quirk Saxophone Quartet, and Marici Saxes. She also participates in the Neoteric Ensemble and The Rock Orchestra, contributing to brass/saxophone sextet performances and contemporary music projects. Her pedagogical work extends to masterclasses at the Nakas Conservatory in Athens and the University of Athens.
