Dr Sarah K Watts is a Senior University Teacher in Performance and Director of Performance at the University of Sheffield's Department of Music. She holds a PhD and is an ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music). Her expertise spans bass clarinet performance, composition, and research in multiphonics. She leads the MA in Music Performance Studies and actively collaborates with composers like Harrison Birtwistle. Watts is a sought-after performer in ensembles like Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble and rarescale, with international festival appearances.
Her research focuses on expanding bass clarinet repertoire through multiphonics, graphic scores, and composer-performer collaboration. Recent grants include a 2024 commission addressing misogyny in music and a Festival of the Mind project using architecture-inspired compositions. She has received major awards including the ARAM title (2016) and Leverhulme Trust funding for her studies in Rotterdam.
Watts teaches extended techniques as foundational skills for clarinetists and advocates for marginalized composers' works. Her pedagogical materials, such as Spectral Immersions, are globally recognized. She directs the PhD research on contrabass clarinet collaborations and regularly performs at International Clarinet Association festivals, Low Clarinet Festivals, and electronic music festivals in South Korea and Mexico.
