Sarah Carr is the Fall 2022 James H. Ottaway Sr. Visiting Professor of Journalism at SUNY New Paltz's Department of Digital Media & Journalism. She teaches an undergraduate seminar, "The Kids’ Story," examining systemic inequality through the lens of youth in education, healthcare, and immigration. A seasoned journalist with two decades of experience, she has written for major outlets including The Washington Post, The New York Times, and ProPublica.
Her research focuses on education equity, social inequality, and marginalized communities. Recent work includes investigations into school funding disparities, childcare economics, and pandemic impacts on literacy. Carr is the author of Hope Against Hope (2013), a seminal work on post-Katrina New Orleans school reforms.
Honors include the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism (2021-22). She has led impactful projects such as The Great Divide investigative team at the Boston Globe and The Teacher Project at Columbia University. Public engagements include a Nov 1, 2022 talk on school reopenings' long-term educational implications.
Carr's career bridges journalism and academia, emphasizing collaborative reporting through initiatives like the podcast What My Students Taught Me. She remains active in fostering student-centered reporting practices.
