Barton Gellman is the 2022 James H. Ottaway Sr. Visiting Professor of Journalism at SUNY New Paltz's Department of Digital Media & Journalism. He is a staff writer at The Atlantic, focusing on democracy and national security. He teaches "The Literature of Fact", a creative non-fiction course, and engages the broader community through public lectures including a Feb. 7 Q&A with President Christian and an April 5 talk on national security.
Awards & Recognition:
- 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (9/11 coverage, Washington Post)
- 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (NSA/Edward Snowden coverage, Washington Post)
Research & Writing: Gellman authored Dark Mirror (2015) on surveillance and Angler (2008) on Dick Cheney's vice presidency. He is a leading voice on U.S. political stability, including coverage of the Jan. 6 Capitol attacks.
Teaching & Mentoring: Over two decades, Gellman has taught courses and delivered lecture series at Princeton University, blending practical journalism with academic rigor.
