Tammy Kim

Tammy Kim serves as the 2021 James H. Ottaway Sr. Visiting Professor of Journalism at SUNY New Paltz's Department of Digital Media & Journalism. She is a freelance reporter, contributing opinion writer for The New York Times, and co-host of the Time to Say Goodbye podcast focusing on Asia and Asian American issues. Her research explores globalized labor systems, racial terminology, and media representation. Kim teaches an upper-level seminar titled 'Writing Globalized Labor' and has previously taught at Yale University, Cooper Union, and the University of Montana School of Journalism.

Her work critiques systemic issues in labor rights and media narratives, including pandemic-era healthcare worker exploitation and the limitations of racial categorization. She co-edited the 2016 book Punk Ethnography, examining contemporary world music. Public engagements include a virtual Q&A with SUNY New Paltz's president and a lecture on her journalism career.
