Sarah Bowman is a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University, joining in 2017 after a 25-year career in organizational communications across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. Her research focuses on rhizomatic and ecological approaches to understanding stakeholder navigation of change, employing sociological theories (Bourdieu, Habermas, etc.) and metamodernism to explore professional practices and pedagogy. She supervises PhD student Ke Xue and holds a PhD in Corporate Communications and Senior Fellow status at the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA, 2021).
Key professional activities include peer reviews for journals like Journal of Communication, roles in the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, and consultancy for the Academic Health Science Network. Her work emphasizes radical pedagogy to address precarity in modernity and the sociology of professions, particularly public relations and advocacy.
Publications span crisis communication, gender dynamics in PR, and metamodern pedagogy, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to organizational and educational challenges. Bowman’s research bridges theory and practice, addressing complex societal and professional transitions through innovative methodologies like the Café Delphi historical method.
