Sarah Beyer is a Doctoral Researcher (externally funded) at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Institute of Animal Cell and Systems Biology within the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences. Her office is located at Martin Luther King Square 3, Room 509, Hamburg, and she has been pursuing PhD research on molecular adaptations to hypoxia in diving mammals' brains since August 2022.
Her academic background includes:
- M.Sc. in Biology from the University of Hamburg (2016–2021), with thesis research on "Zika virus infection in neuronal cells: the role of importin-α proteins" at the Leibniz Institute of Virology.
- B.Sc. in Biology from Philipps-University Marburg (2005–2008), focusing on "Studies on the embryonic expression of gamma-protocadherins in craniofacial mesenchyme and heart development of mice".
Her current work investigates intrinsic molecular adaptations enabling diving mammals' brain hypoxia tolerance, emphasizing astrocyte-specific mechanisms. Through comparative transcriptome analyses and protein assays, she identifies target genes involved in cellular defense against hypoxic damage, bridging comparative physiology and neuroprotective strategies with potential biomedical applications.
Funded externally, she operates within the Molecular Animal Physiology research group led by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Burmester. Her methodology integrates molecular biology techniques to explore evolutionary adaptations in extreme physiological conditions, contributing to broader understanding of oxygen metabolism in neural systems.
