Eda Merve Dönmez is a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences, Department of Biology, within the Institute of Animal Cell and Systems Biology's Molecular Animal Physiology division. She works in cooperation with the Institute of Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research (Büsum) on the EU Horizon SATURN project investigating physiological impacts of parasitic damage in German harbor porpoises.
- Education:
- PhD Candidate (since 2021)
- MSc Biology (2020), University of Hamburg
- BSc Biology (2017), University of Hamburg
- BSc Biology (2014), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf
Her research examines molecular responses to hypoxia and respiratory damage in cetaceans, using comparative transcriptome analyses of harbor porpoise muscles and lungs. Key methods include qRT-PCR, ELISA, Western Blot, and cell line assays to validate molecular adaptations.
Recent publication: Frontiers in Marine Science (2023) demonstrates oxidative stress responses in parasitized porpoises' muscles, suggesting compensatory mechanisms maintaining diving viability despite respiratory impairment.
