Sandy Steel is a Professor of Law and Philosophy of Law at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Law, holding the Dr Lee Shau Kee's Sir Man Kam Lo Fellowship at Wadham College. He concurrently serves as a Global Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School (London). His research focuses on foundational issues in private law across common and civil law systems, including causation, liability, and moral justifications for legal doctrines. He was awarded the Modern Law Review's Wedderburn Prize (2016) and holds a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship (2024–2027). His work has influenced high courts globally and explores topics like omissions liability, tort law fairness, and remedial duties.
Key research interests include comparative private law, jurisprudence, and the intersection of moral philosophy with legal frameworks. He has co-authored seminal works like Great Debates in Jurisprudence and edited volumes on topics such as state liability and Jane Stapleton's contributions to tort law. His recent publications address public authority liability, deterrence in private law, and the moral necessity of tort law.
Prof. Steel has held visiting positions at institutions including Hong Kong University, NYU, and Singapore Management University. His current projects include a book on omissions in tort law and analyses of AI's impact on legal causation. His scholarship emphasizes foundational questions, such as the justification of legal exceptions to causation proof and the role of fault in liability systems.
