Alexander (Sandy) Steel

Professor Alexander Steel holds positions as Professor of Law and Philosophy of Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford, Dr Lee Shau Kee's Sir Man Kam Lo Fellow in Law at Wadham College, and Global Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School (London). He is currently on leave from Oxford from October 2024 to October 2027 under a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship.

His research focuses on foundational questions in private law across common law and civilian jurisdictions, including causation, self-defense, moral basis of compensatory duties, and deterrence arguments. He co-authored Great Debates in Jurisprudence (Palgrave, 2014, 2nd ed. 2018) and has been cited by the UK Supreme Court, Supreme Court of Canada, and High Court of Australia. His work bridges philosophical and doctrinal legal analysis.

He has held visiting positions at institutions including Hong Kong University, NYU, and National University of Singapore. Notable recognition includes the 2016 Wedderburn Prize from the Modern Law Review for his influential article on tort law causation exceptions.
