Samuel Beswick is an Assistant Professor at the Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. He holds degrees including an SJD from Harvard Law School and LLB from the University of Auckland. His research focuses on torts, unjust enrichment, legal limitations, and remedies, with a particular interest in the temporal scope of judicial decisions and rule of law principles in public authority liability. He is editor of Tort Law: Cases and Commentaries and the Common Law Torts Wiki, and co-editor of an upcoming Encyclopedia of Private Law: Torts. Beswick has held academic positions at Harvard, King’s College London, and the University of Auckland, and has practiced law in New Zealand and the UK.

Research emphasizes the interplay between judicial decision-making and legal temporality, with recent work critiquing the doctrine of prospective overruling in civil cases across multiple jurisdictions. He advocates for non-retroactive legal changes to align with rule of law principles.
