Sam Kung is a Professor in the Department of Immunology at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He holds the position of Director of the Lentiviral Vector Viral Particles Production Core Platform. His research focuses on natural killer (NK) cell biology, including their migration dynamics, interactions with dendritic cells, and roles in tumor microenvironments. His work integrates gene therapy platforms and microfluidics to advance immunotherapy strategies for cancer.
Dr. Kung earned his B.Sc. and MPhil from the University of Hong Kong, followed by a PhD in immunology from the University of Toronto. He completed postdoctoral training at UCLA in lentiviruses and gene therapy. His research has been supported by grants such as the CFI-funded lab and Manitoba Medical Service Foundation awards.
Award highlights include multiple Excellence in Teaching Awards from the Immunology Department and a Terry Fox Postdoctoral Fellowship. He is actively involved in professional organizations like the Canadian Society of Immunology and the Society for Natural Immunity.
Current affiliations include the CancerCare Breast Cancer Research Group, Prairie Infectious Immunology Network, and Manitoba Epigenetics Network. His lab’s innovations include protocols for genetic engineering of primary NK cells and live-cell analysis platforms for immune cell interactions.
