Saku Mattila serves as a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki's Department of Microbiology within the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. His work bridges chemical sciences and plant biochemistry, with active involvement in the Doctoral Programme in Integrative Life Science.
His research focuses on enzyme engineering and biocatalytic processes, particularly exploring flavonoid biosynthesis pathways in plants. Key interests include dihydroflavonol 4-reductase enzymes, anthocyanin production, and the development of novel synthetic methods for complex organic molecules like guanidine bases.
Recent publications demonstrate his dual expertise in plant biochemistry (Petunia enzyme engineering) and organic synthesis (guanidine base development). His work combines protein chemistry with analytical techniques including NMR spectroscopy and chromatography.
Currently leading research within the active project Biocatalytic degradation of lignin carbo (2023-2025) funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, he collaborates with researchers across microbiology and chemical engineering disciplines.
