Sakari Karvonen

Sakari Karvonen is a Research Professor at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), affiliated with the Department of Healthcare and Social Welfare and the Welfare State Research unit. His work centers on social and health inequalities, particularly among youth, and contributes to the development of social monitoring systems and indicators of social sustainability.

His research interests include:

• Socioeconomic and regional variations in health and well-being
• Inequalities in young people’s well-being
• Health gradients and income-related disparities
• Social monitoring and reporting frameworks
• Social sustainability and welfare policy
• Medical sociology and health systems research

His recent publications analyze longitudinal trends in adolescent health behaviors, the impact of socioeconomic disadvantage on health outcomes, and the role of social transfers in mitigating economic shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. His work often employs register-based and population-level data to understand structural determinants of health.

His scientific contributions include editorial roles as Associate Editor of Frontiers in Sociology and Review Editor of Frontiers in Public Health, as well as board membership for the journal Yhteiskuntapolitiikka (Society & Politics).

Karvonen has led and contributed to major research projects such as Tobrisk-Cov, NUPAT, CLIMATE NUDGE, and HEATCLIM. He is also involved in the development of Finland’s social monitoring system and the Healthy Finland Survey. He was previously Director of Department at THL (2010–2014) and Head of Unit at THL/STAKES (2006–2008).

He holds a Doctorate in Political Science (Sociology) from the University of Helsinki (1998), where he also earned the title of Adjunct Professor (Docent) in Medical Sociology.
