Sabine Schneider

Dr Sabine Schneider is an LSE Fellow in the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She holds expertise in International Economic History, Modern State-Building, and Monetary Policy. Her research focuses on economic governance, state-building, and political economy since 1800, with a particular emphasis on Germany’s role in the international gold standard system and the interplay between monetary policy and global trade.

Dr Schneider earned her PhD and MPhil from the University of Cambridge and previously held the Rank-Manning Research Fellowship at New College, Oxford. She is affiliated with the Oxford Centre for Economic and Social History and the Oxford Global Correspondent Banking Project.

Her research explores themes such as financial crises, central banking, and the political economy of monetary union. Her book project, War, Finance and Diplomacy: Germany and the Politics of the International Gold Standard, 1834-1914, investigates Germany’s transition to a national gold currency and its global financial relations. This work has received the Ellen McArthur Prize and ESRC funding.

In teaching, she offers MSc courses on financial, monetary, and global economic history, along with dissertation supervision. Notable courses include EH439 (History of Banking Systems) and EH430 (Monetary and Financial History). She has been recognized for teaching excellence with nominations for the LSE Class Teacher Award and Student Union Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Current research projects include analyses of bimetallic controversies in Britain, inflation dynamics in Germany, and the political economy of currency integration. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on financial globalization and institutional legacy.
