Enrique Jorge Sotelo is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economic History, Institutions, Policy, and Global Economy at the University of Barcelona, affiliated with the Faculty of Economics and Business. He holds a PhD in Economic History from the London School of Economics (2019), following advanced studies in Economics and Economic History from both LSE and the University of Barcelona.
His research focuses on monetary and financial history, particularly the political economy of financial crises, central banking operations, and interwar economic policies. Key areas include lender-of-last-resort mechanisms, currency stabilization, and the impact of global events like WWI and the Great Depression on Spain's financial systems.
He has received prestigious awards including the 2020 Earl J. Hamilton Prize and the Santander Financial Institute PhD Thesis Prize. His work explores topics such as democratic transitions' impact on banking crises, elite responses to financial instability, and regional dimensions of central banking in Spain. Current projects include studies on the Banco de España's regional operations and the political economy of interwar Spain.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on monetary and financial history at undergraduate and graduate levels, blending historical analysis with contemporary policy relevance.
