Dr. S.E. Gontarski is the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of English at Florida State University (FSU), specializing in Modernist texts, Samuel Beckett, and the history of publishing. He holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1974) and has held prestigious fellowships including four National Endowment for the Humanities grants and two Fulbright Professorships. His research focuses on Modernist literature, performance theory, and textual scholarship, with notable works including The Intent of Undoing in Samuel Beckett’s Dramatic Texts (1985) and editions of Beckett’s theatrical notebooks. Gontarski has also contributed to the study of publishing history through works like Modernism, Censorship, and the Politics of Publishing (2000).
He has edited major journals such as the Journal of Beckett Studies and serves as General Editor for several book series, including Understanding Philosophy/Understanding Modernism. His awards include the Inicial Award at the Nis Book Fair (2013) for his Serbian-translated work. Gontarski’s work bridges textual analysis, performance studies, and archival research, with affiliations at FSU’s History of Text Technologies (HoTT) program and collaborations internationally, including residencies at the American Academy in Rome and the Bogliasco Foundation.
Notable contributions include studies on Tennessee Williams, William Burroughs, and the intersections of literature with cultural and political contexts. His recent publications (2021–2025) address dystopian modernism, Beckett’s late works, and interdisciplinary artistic practices. Gontarski’s archive collaborations, such as the William S. Burroughs Archive at FSU, underscore his commitment to preserving literary heritage.
