Dr. Conor Carville is an Associate Professor in English and Creative Writing at the University of Reading's Department of English Literature, part of the School of Humanities. He serves as Co-Director of the Samuel Beckett Centre and Programme Director for the BA in English. His research focuses on Irish literature from 1800 onwards, particularly Samuel Beckett, contemporary poetry, and intersections with art history. Key publications include Samuel Beckett and the Visual Arts (2019) and English Martyrs (2019), a poetry collection.
His research spans Beckett's visual aesthetics, 20th-century Irish poetry, and late modernism. Notable projects include the British Academy-funded 'Room to Rhyme' exploring Northern Ireland's poetry and arts policies (1968-1978), resulting in workshops, conferences, and archival work with Seamus Heaney's materials. He supervises PhD students in Beckett studies, Yeats analysis, and creative writing.
Carville's publications blend literary criticism with interdisciplinary approaches, examining topics like trauma in Irish literature, cultural memory, and the legacy of modernist experimentation. His teaching includes modules on poetry, modernism, and creative writing.
