Dr. Onno Kosters is an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University's Humanities faculty. His primary affiliations include the Translation, Intercultural Communication and Education group and the Modern and Contemporary Literature research unit. With a PhD in English literature from Utrecht University (1999), he specializes in Anglo-Irish modernism and literary translation.
His research explores three interconnected domains: 1) Modernist literature with emphasis on James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and T.S. Eliot; 2) Poetry analysis spanning creative writing, narratology, and translation theory; 3) Literary translation praxis, particularly English-Dutch poetic translation. Current projects include a Dutch retranslation of Eliot's The Waste Land and studies on AI-assisted literary translation.
Publications since 2023 demonstrate strong focus on modernist poetry translation (especially Eliot's The Waste Land), Joyce studies, and computational translation methods. His work frequently intersects digital humanities, with articles examining ChatGPT's role in literary machine translation and quality assessment frameworks for translated literature.
Awards recognizing his contributions include the
- Turing Poetry Award (2013) for original poetic work
- Filter Translation Award (2006) for his Dutch translation of Beckett's Watt
As a translator, he has rendered major works by Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney, Patti Smith, and Ocean Vuong into Dutch. He co-directed the 2014 International James Joyce Symposium in Utrecht and serves on editorial boards for European Joyce Studies and Hypermedia Joyce Studies.
