S. L. Crawley is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of South Florida. With a Ph.D. from the University of Florida (2002), Dr. Crawley has established a distinguished career examining intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and class through embodiment theories and qualitative methodologies.
Education:
- Ph.D., University of Florida, 2002
Dr. Crawley's research critically investigates social impacts on physical bodies through queer and feminist theoretical frameworks, focusing on identity production in contexts like sports, work, and digital spaces. Their scholarship extends gender performativity theory via interactionism (as demonstrated in the co-authored book Gendering Bodies, 2008) and explores epistemological questions in empirical social science, including American pragmatism and New Materialisms. Current work emphasizes methodological interventions and comparative approaches to knowledge production.
Recent publications (2021-2024) reveal a cohesive trajectory toward queer/feminist epistemologies and ethnomethodological applications, with recurring themes of digital identity shifts, embodiment negotiations, and critiques of traditional research frameworks. Articles consistently bridge theoretical innovation with empirical analysis of marginality, particularly regarding non-binary identities, Ukrainian queer media, and sport-related gender dynamics.
Professional Leadership:
- Chair, American Sociological Association's Section on Sex & Gender (2019-2021)
- Chair, ASA Jessie Bernard Award Selection Committee (2021)
Dr. Crawley actively engages public discourse through the TedxUSF Talk "We Are All Trans" and service on editorial boards, demonstrating commitment to translating academic insights into broader societal conversations about gender and identity.
