Dr. David Andrew Griffiths is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey. He serves as Programme Director for the MSc Sex, Gender and Sexuality Studies and is a founding member of the Sex, Gender and Sexualities Research Group. His work bridges queer theory, feminist science studies, and medical humanities, with a focus on challenging medicalized perspectives of non-normative bodies. Key areas include intersex history in Britain, queer approaches to embodiment, and the cultural politics of medicine.
Research interests encompass interdisciplinary studies of sex, gender, and sexuality, including topics like intersex classifications, surgical interventions on bodies, and the historical intersection of science and identity. Griffiths leads the FUTURESEX initiative and has published widely on intersex history, queer biology, and the socio-cultural dimensions of medical practices. His recent work critiques how medical discourses construct normative bodies and explores alternative frameworks for understanding embodiment.
Publications highlight themes such as the performative nature of medical diagnoses, the legal definitions of sex, and the psychological dimensions of queer identities. His scholarship emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing from queer theory, feminist science studies, and cultural history to challenge dominant narratives in medicine and science.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate Sociology and Media/Communications courses, as well as leadership of the Master’s programme in Sex, Gender and Sexuality Studies. He actively supervises PhD students in queer theory, feminist science studies, intersex studies, and embodiment.
