Jyoti Puri is a Professor of Sociology at Boston University’s Department of Sociology. Her work intersects sociology with sexuality/queer studies, critical death studies, and postcolonial/decolonial theories, focusing on marginalized communities’ experiences of state regulation. She has authored seminal books like *Sexual States* (2016), which won the ASA’s Distinguished Book Award, and co-edited influential journal issues such as *Feminist Mournings* (2022).
Her current research explores South Asian migrant death practices in the U.S./Canada, supported by a 2022-2023 Guggenheim Fellowship. Puri serves on editorial boards for *Foucault Studies*, *Gender & Society*, and *SIGNS*, and has held leadership roles in ASA sections.
Awarded the Jessie Bernard Award (2021) and Simon-Gagnon Lifetime Achievement Award (2023), her scholarship challenges Eurocentric frameworks and centers decolonial perspectives across global contexts.
