Ryan Kelly serves as the inaugural Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Success and Associate Professor of Music in Bands at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, providing strategic oversight for curriculum, student wellness, and accreditation. Previously, he held dual roles as Associate Director of the Butler School of Music and Associate Director of Bands at The University of Texas at Austin, conducting the Wind Symphony and New Music Ensemble while teaching conducting and directing Longhorn Music Camp. His career began as a high school band director in Florida after early teaching positions at the University of Central Florida.
His educational credentials include Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Education from Florida State University and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin.
Kelly's scholarly work centers on wind band pedagogy and music education, evidenced by publications in Research Perspectives in Music Education, Florida Music Director, and Southwestern Musician. He actively bridges research and practice through collaborations with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts and Emmy Award-winning composer Adam Schoenberg, transcribing and premiering their works for wind ensemble. His academic administration research emerges from designing curriculum frameworks and student success initiatives at the Jacobs School.
Professionally, Kelly maintains active engagement as a guest conductor for all-state honor bands nationwide and faculty member at Austria's World Youth Wind Orchestra Project. He holds elected membership in the American Bandmasters Association and leadership roles including past chair of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Social Media Committee, secretary for the Big 12 Band Directors Association, and board member of the Florida Music Educators Association. His presentations span state conferences in Texas, Florida, and Ohio alongside CBDNA national events.
