Professor Ruth Blakeley is Vice-President and Head of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield, where she also serves as Professor of Politics and International Relations. Her career spans leadership roles at the University of Kent, including Head of School and Sub-Dean, and she has directed the White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership and chaired the British International Studies Association (BISA).

Her research focuses on international security, terrorism, political violence, and human rights, with a particular emphasis on state violence, torture, US/UK foreign policy, and the intersection of international political economy with human rights governance. She co-founded The Rendition Project, a landmark study of CIA rendition operations funded by the ESRC, which has informed litigation and NGO advocacy globally.
Ruth Blakeley’s recent publications address the legal, ethical, and policy dimensions of torture and state violence, particularly in counter-terrorism contexts. Her work has shaped debates on accountability and transparency, including direct engagement with the UK Intelligence and Security Committee Inquiry and the United Nations. She also contributed to the theatre production Rendition, bridging academic research with public advocacy.
As a member of the editorial boards for journals like International Affairs and Review of International Studies, she remains central to advancing critical perspectives in terrorism and human rights scholarship.
