Jac St John is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminster since 2021, previously serving as a Visiting Lecturer from 2016. They hold a PhD in Modern History (University of St Andrews, 2020, AHRC-funded), MSc in Contemporary History (University of Edinburgh, 2015), and BA in History and Politics (Queen Mary, University of London, 2012).
Research focuses on policing history, surveillance, counterinsurgency, and counterterrorism, tracing UK practices from decolonization to the War on Terror. Current projects include investigating UK Special Forces war crimes in Afghanistan (2010–2013) and co-launching Unredacted (2024), a research unit exposing secretive state and corporate national security practices. Previously, they contributed to the ESRC-funded Rendition Project, documenting US/UK involvement in rendition and torture.
Engagement includes collaborations with social justice organizations like Inquest, Women in Prison, and Campaign Against Arms Trade through the Centre for Social Justice Research. Outputs include peer-reviewed articles and policy reports analyzing British imperialism and security policies.
