Helen Duffy is a Senior Fellow at the Melbourne Law School (Melbourne Law Masters) and holds the Gieskes Chair of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the Grotius Centre, University of Leiden. She also serves as an Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow. Her practice, Human Rights in Practice, focuses on strategic human rights litigation, international terrorism, and the rule of law. She has addressed cases involving CIA rendition, terrorism prosecutions, judicial independence, slavery, and genocide across regional and international forums.
Her expertise spans international criminal law, humanitarian law, and transnational legal frameworks. She previously served as Legal Director of INTERIGHTS, Legal Director of the Centro para Accion Legal en Derechos Humanos in Guatemala, Counsel to Human Rights Watch, and Legal Officer at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
Her work emphasizes bridging practice and academia through publications like The ‘War on Terror’ and the Framework of International Law (2015). She collaborates with institutions such as the Grotius Centre and her own practice to advance human rights advocacy and legal scholarship.
