Dr. Lisa Stampnitzky is a Lecturer in Politics at the University of Sheffield. Her research explores the intersection of knowledge, violence, and power, focusing on how expert and popular narratives shape understandings of war, terrorism, and human rights. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and has held research fellowships at prestigious institutions including Stanford, Oxford, and Harvard.

Her work analyzes how state and non-state violence are socially constructed, emphasizing the politics of secrecy and expertise. Her current book project, How Torture Became Speakable, investigates the open justification of torture post-9/11. Her first book, Disciplining Terror, traces the historical construction of terrorism as a concept.
Recent publications span critical security studies, terrorism definitions, and the sociology of expertise. She has received multiple awards for her scholarship, including the Francesco Guicciardini Prize and International Political Sociology Book Award.
