Rupert Read is an Emeritus Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia (UEA). He holds affiliations with the Philosophy Department, the Wittgenstein Research Group, and the ClimateUEA initiative. His academic journey includes a PhD from Rutgers University and prior roles at Manchester University and the Wittgenstein Workshop. He has been a Green Party councillor, spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, and co-founder of the Climate Majority Party.
Education: BA (First Class) in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from Balliol College, Oxford; PhD from Rutgers University; Advanced Certificate in Higher Education Practice from UEA.
Research focuses on Wittgensteinian philosophy, ecological ethics, and critiques of political liberalism. Key interests include applying Wittgenstein to science, ecology, and film. Major publications include The New Wittgenstein and Climate Majority Project: Setting the Stage.
Rupert’s work bridges academia and activism, addressing climate crisis through philosophy and policy. Recent articles explore climate ethics, scientism, and intergenerational justice. His awards include AHRC funding and recognition for public philosophy.
