Ruben Weesie is a PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), affiliated with the Faculty of Science and the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). His research focuses on qualitative narratives of drought-to-flood events, particularly under the PerfectSTORM project, examining how narratives shape responses to such climatic extremes. Ruben holds an MSc in Sustainable Development (Utrecht University, 2018) and a BSc in Human Geography (Utrecht University, 2015).
Before his PhD, he worked as a junior lecturer at the University of Amsterdam’s Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) and as an international development consultant advising on agro-pastoral projects in West Africa for clients like DFID and IWAD Ghana. His work emphasizes climate adaptation dynamics in Sub-Saharan Africa, including water reservoirs, irrigation schemes, and conflict-cooperation dynamics arising from adaptation projects.
Research Interests:
- Climate change adaptation and resilience
- Water resource management in arid regions
- Socio-environmental narratives and policy
- Agro-pastoral conflicts and commons governance
Key Articles: Recent work includes analyzing drought-to-flood interactions globally and case studies on adaptation interventions in Kenya and Ghana. His research bridges hydrological, ecological, and social systems to address climate risk challenges.
