Dr Rowan Jaines serves as a Lecturer in Human Environmental Geography at the School of Geography and Planning, University of Sheffield. Her research critically investigates rural landscapes through the lens of cultural materialism, focusing on uncovering \"oppressed histories\" concealed within seemingly natural environments and interrogating spatial temporalities of class, labour, and property.
Education:
- Masters in Anthropology, University of Sussex
- PhD in Geography, University of Sheffield (ESRC-sponsored), thesis: \"Geographies of Discontent: Petrified Unrest in the Fens of Eastern England\"
Research Interests: Dr Jaines specializes in critical rural geography, examining the historic production of the urban-rural divide, land ownership and democracy in UK rural landscapes, and suppressed histories of the recent past. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology, geography, and critical theory to analyze how landscapes encode power relations and social conflict, with particular emphasis on Walter Benjamin's theoretical frameworks.
Her 2023 publication in The Sociological Review on spectral labour in the Fens demonstrates her innovative methodology at the intersection of human geography and critical sociology, revealing how rural landscapes materialize historical injustices through spectral presences of labor.
Dr Jaines' doctoral research was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). She actively engages in interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching within the School of Geography and Planning, prioritizing collaborative research that transcends traditional academic boundaries.
