Dr. Yu Chen is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies. She holds a BSc from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, two MSc degrees from Fudan University (Shanghai) and the University of Oslo (Norway), and a PhD in Urban Studies from the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on China’s urbanization, rural-to-urban migration, urban development, labour markets, and housing policies. She has been funded by ESRC, WUN, and UCCL, leading projects such as 'Dynamics of Health & Environmental Inequalities in Hebei Province' (£199,502) and 'Urban Transformations in China' (£162,025).
Her work analyzes the social, economic, and environmental consequences of China’s massive urbanization, including migrant integration, housing market dynamics, and spatial segregation. Key publications include contributions to Urban Studies, Habitat International, and Environment and Planning B. She co-edited Urban Inequality and Segregation in Europe and China (2021), advancing cross-regional comparisons. Teaching areas include Chinese cities, population-environment dynamics, and research methods.
Dr. Chen collaborates with the Migration Research Group and the Sheffield Institute for International Development (SIID). She supervises PhD students in urbanization, migration, and housing, emphasizing critical thinking and policy-relevant research.
