Tarver's visual storytelling bridges personal history—rooted in his Oklahoma upbringing—with national recognition of Black horse culture, amplified recently by pop-culture phenomena like Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' album. His photographs, spanning from 1992 to the present, highlight urban cowboys, rural ranch communities, and Black rodeo traditions, with a focus on correcting racialized historical erasure. Tarver's work, supported by grants like the National Geographic grant, has been featured in media outlets including The Philadelphia Inquirer, WHYY, and Hyperallergic, cementing his role as a leading voice in Black cultural documentation.
