Drew Thompson is an Associate Professor at Bard Graduate Center (New York), specializing in African/African-American visual and material culture, histories of photography, and Black modernism. He earned a PhD in History from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and a BA in History and Art History from Williams College.
Research & Practice: Thompson’s work bridges art history and curatorial practice, focusing on Black internationalist movements, decolonization, and the politics of photographic archives. His recent exhibitions include Sightlines on Peace, Power & Prestige: Metal Arts in Africa (2025) and Benjamin Wigfall & Communications Village (2023). He has contributed to publications by the Art Institute of Chicago, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and Walther Collection.
Public Engagement: Thompson advises non-profits like the Brooklyn Museum and Watson Foundation, emphasizing public access to humanities. He is currently on leave (2025–2026) while completing a new book on surveillance and Black solidarity.
