Amanda Thompson is a Lecturer at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), specializing in the social history of sewn arts, craft and gender dynamics in settler colonial contexts, and American craft through an intersectional lens. She holds a PhD in Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture from the Bard Graduate Center.
Her research is supported by grants and fellowships from institutions like the American Philosophical Society and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Thompson has extensive museum experience, including roles at the New York Historical Society, Museum for African Art, and Jewish Museum. She currently serves on the Board of the Tomaquag Museum, an Indigenous-led institution focused on Native cultures of Southern New England.
Publications include contributions to Collections and the Journal of Modern Craft. Her work bridges museum studies, material culture, and critical frameworks addressing gender and colonialism.
