Laylah Amatullah Barrayn is a Lecturer at Rutgers University–Newark in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media. Based in New York City, she is an award-winning documentary and portrait photographer, writer, and curator whose work has been featured in major publications including The New York Times, Vogue, and National Geographic.
- Education: MA from New York University
Her research and creative practice focuses on cultural traditions and social justice narratives of Black diasporic communities through documentary photography, portraiture, and curatorial projects. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Museum of the African Diaspora (San Francisco), Taubman Museum of Art, MANIFESTA Biennale (Italy), and Brighton Photo Biennial (UK).

- Royal Photographic Society’s Hundred Heroines (2018)
Barrayn has presented her work at Yale, Harvard, Tate Modern, and the Schomburg Center. She is currently working on a book about contemporary Black photographers worldwide.
