Anthony Alvarez

Anthony Alvarez is a Part-Time Lecturer at Rutgers University, affiliated with the Department of Arts, Culture and Media. As a Newark native, he leads the Free School initiative at Express Newark and serves as Assistant Director for SHINE Portrait Studio, focusing on community-building through contemporary art and collaborative practices.

• Education: BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute, Ed.M in Adult Education with certificates in Higher Education Teaching (Rutgers Graduate School of Education) and Creative Entrepreneurship (Rutgers Business School).

His research and practice intersect contemporary art, photography, and urban community development, emphasizing socially engaged curricula and cultural preservation. Recent publications address urban gentrification and identity. Alvarez has received recognition as a Leadership Newark Public Policy Fellow.
