Professor Ron Firestein is an Adjunct Professor (Research) at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, leading the Centre for Cancer Research. He specializes in Cancer Research, Oncology Translational Medicine, and Oncology Drug Discovery. He earned his BA in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and MD/PhD from Stanford University, followed by residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
His research focuses on colon cancer molecular pathology, target identification/validation using NGS and high-throughput screens. He has published in high-impact journals like Cancer Cell, Cell, and Nature, with over 48 publications and 10 patents. Key projects include pediatric high-grade glioma therapies, cancer epigenome targeting, and CRISPR-based therapeutic discovery.
His top research areas include colon cancer biology, therapeutic target validation, and biomarker development. Recent work highlights new therapeutic opportunities in pediatric cancers and SWI/SNF complex roles in intestinal differentiation.
He has received the Thomas Gil award and collaborates widely on global initiatives like the Children's Brain Tumor Network. His leadership includes roles as Co-Director of the Victorian Paediatric Cancer Consortium and Principal Investigator on multiple grants.
