Rolf-Dieter Heuer is an experimental particle physicist and former Full Professor (C4) at the University of Hamburg. He served as Director General of CERN (2009-2015) and Research Director at DESY (2004-2009). His leadership roles include President of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (since 2016) and member of the High Level Group of Scientific Advisors (SAM, since 2015).
- Education: PhD in Physics from University of Heidelberg (1977), supervised by Prof. Joachim Heintze
- Prior positions: Staff member at CERN (1984-1998), OPAL experiment spokesperson (1994-1998), and research scientist at University of Heidelberg (1977-1983)
Research focuses on electron-positron collision studies, detector system design, and leadership in large-scale physics collaborations. He pioneered preparations for electron-positron Linear Collider experiments at Hamburg, establishing a globally leading group.
Notable awards include the Edison Volta Prize (2012), Grand Cross of the Order of Merit (2015), and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (2016). He holds nineteen honorary doctorates from institutions worldwide.
He has advised and coordinated major projects like LEP and LHC, and contributed to restructuring German particle physics research. His advisory roles span international scientific committees and academies including the Leopoldina and Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.
