John Hobbs is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University. His research focuses on fundamental particle physics at high-energy colliders, particularly through the ATLAS collaboration at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. He is renowned for contributions to the discovery of the Higgs boson and ongoing studies of its properties, including searches for new particles beyond the Standard Model.
Education: Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago (1991), thesis work on the OPAL experiment at CERN LEP.
Research Interests:
- Higgs boson decay mechanisms and interactions
- Vector boson production measurements
- Searches for new particles in high-energy collision data
- Legacy work on W boson mass measurements (DZero experiment) and top quark discovery analyses
Awards & Recognition:
- American Physical Society Fellowship
- Departmental teaching excellence awards
- 2024 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Scholarship
Professional History: Postdoctoral work at CERN (OPAL) and Fermilab (DZero), joined Stony Brook faculty in 1998. Active collaborator in both DZero and ATLAS experiments.
Research Group: Leads a research group focused on collider-based particle physics investigations through the ATLAS collaboration.
