معرفی
Joseph Incandela is an American particle physicist and Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, currently based at CERN. He served as spokesperson for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider from 2011 to 2014, during which he announced the Higgs boson discovery on July 4, 2012.
Education:
- PhD in Physics from University of Chicago (1986)
- Bachelor of Science from University of Chicago
Research Interests: Incandela specializes in experimental particle physics with focus on fundamental particle detection and Standard Model validation. His career spans W/Z boson studies, top quark discovery via b-tagging techniques at Fermilab, and Higgs boson detection at CERN. He pioneered silicon detector development for high-precision tracking in high-radiation environments, enabling critical measurements of particle decay channels.
Scientific Awards:
- 2012 Special Fundamental Physics Prize for Higgs boson discovery
- Election to National Academy of Sciences (2015)
Labs and Teams: Incandela led the CMS tracking system construction from 1997-2011 and directed the 3,000+ member collaboration as spokesperson during the Higgs discovery phase. Previously, he co-led Fermilab's top quark search team (1991-1997) and contributed to CERN's UA2 experiment for W/Z boson studies (1986-1991), establishing foundational techniques for heavy quark identification.
