Roland Zahn is a Clinical Professor of Mood Disorders & Cognitive Neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, affiliated with the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre since 2013. His work bridges neuropsychiatry and cognitive neuroscience, focusing on neurocognitive mechanisms of self-blame, guilt, and moral motivation in depression and neuropsychiatric conditions.
- Doctor of Medicine, University of Aachen (1999)
- Specialist training in Psychiatry, Freiburg University (2007)
Roland's research identifies overlapping fronto-temporo-mesolimbic networks for social knowledge and moral motivations. He pioneered the discovery of SCC-ATL decoupling in major depressive disorder and developed the first fMRI signature for recurrence risk. His lab applies neurofeedback, transcranial stimulation, and machine learning to create personalized treatments, including mobile/virtual reality tools.
Recent publications span oxytocin's role in attachment, neurofeedback for self-esteem (2025), and SCC-ATL modulation (2019). He collaborates internationally with institutions like the D'OR Research Institute (Rio de Janeiro) and Maudsley NHS Trust, where he runs a Vagus Nerve Stimulation clinic.
