Prof. Dr. Roland Peter Kehrein is a Professor at the Department of German Studies and Arts, Philipps-Universität Marburg, and since June 2021 has been temporarily seconded to the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz as Deputy Secretary General and for Scientific Management and Research Coordination. He has held significant roles at Marburg, including Academy Research Professorship for German Linguistics and leadership of the Empirical Research Group in the Regionalsprache.de (REDE) project since 2008.

- Magister Artium in German Philology (major), Comparative Linguistics, and Film Studies, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (1991–1996)
- Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Philosophy from Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University Greifswald (2001)
Kehrein’s research spans language variation, language change, German regional languages, and interdisciplinary work in phonetics, phonology, and prosody. His work often integrates empirical methods and sociolinguistic frameworks, with a focus on speech perception and dialectological geography.
He has contributed to academic governance as Treasurer of the International Society for Dialectology of German (IGDD) and Managing Editor of the journal Germanistische Linguistik (2016–2021). Kehrein has organized key conferences, including the 2013 Marburg Workshop on regional language research and panels at the Sociolinguistics Symposium 16 (2006).

Kehrein has led major projects like the Regionalsprache.de (REDE) initiative and served as Speaker of the Forum Language Variation (Section 11 of IGDD, 2003–2008). He remains active in forensic phonetics (IAFPA member since 2020) and linguistic geography (Editorial Board, Journal of Linguistic Geography).
