Rohit Loomba is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), affiliated with the Vc Health Sciences Schools. He leads the NAFLD Research Center and the Loomba Lab, focusing on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD), and non-invasive diagnostics.
His education includes an MBBS (MD equivalent) from the Armed Forces Medical College, India (1999), followed by residency at St. Luke’s Hospital and fellowships in Hepatology (NIH/NIDDK) and Gastroenterology (UCSD).
Key research areas include fibrosis progression, genetic risk factors, and clinical trials for therapies like tirzepatide and denifanstat. He is Principal Investigator on multiple NIH grants, including studies on non-invasive screening, biomarkers, and imaging technologies (e.g., MRI elastography).
Notable contributions include developing the MASH Resolution Index and MEFIB Index for non-invasive assessment, and leadership in global MASLD epidemiology. His work addresses disparities in liver disease care, particularly among Hispanic populations and patients with HIV.
