Wile Balkhed is a doctoral student at the Department of Health, Medicine and Care (HMV) at Linköping University (LiU), focusing on chronic liver diseases, particularly metabolically associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and non-invasive diagnostic methods. His research explores the interplay between body composition, muscle wasting (sarcopenia), and liver health using advanced imaging techniques like MRI and elastography.
- Medical Program, Karolinska Institutet (2016–2022)
- Board-certified physician in gastroenterology and hepatology
His research spans early-stage fatty liver disease in primary care to advanced cirrhosis in specialist settings. Key projects include EPSOMiP (linking fatty liver to cardiovascular disease) and ACCESS-ESLD (muscle wasting surveillance in end-stage liver disease). Publications emphasize:
- MRI-based body composition analysis
- MASLD prevalence in type 2 diabetes
- Muscle fat infiltration as a risk marker
- Clinical surveillance protocols for hepatocellular carcinoma
Labs/teams include the LiU research network for ectopic fat deposition and the CMIV (Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization) group.
