Jeffrey V Lazarus

Prof Jeffrey V Lazarus is a Full Professor at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy and Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona. He leads the Public Health Liver Group at ISGlobal and holds affiliations with multiple global health institutions. He previously served as Professor at LUHS Medical Academy (Lithuania), Affiliated Professor at CHIP (University of Copenhagen), and at the University of Porto, Portugal.

His research focuses on public health liver policy, liver health epidemiology, models of care for steatotic liver disease, economic analyses, and person-centered care. He is a leading expert in MASLD/MASH and viral hepatitis, with a strong emphasis on health systems and global policy. His work bridges clinical hepatology with public health implementation and equity.

His recent publications reveal a dominant focus on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/MASH), including global prevalence, policy indices, diagnostic strategies, economic burden, and disparities. He also leads major consensus initiatives in COVID-19, HIV, and viral hepatitis elimination, often using Delphi methods and modeling approaches. His work is highly policy-relevant and published in top journals like Nature, The Lancet, and Journal of Hepatology.

He has advised WHO, the Global Fund, and numerous governments. He co-chairs the Innovations in SLD Think-tank and chairs the Wilton Park NAFLD meetings. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Hepatology and Liver International.

He leads the Global Think-tank on Steatotic Liver Disease, MASH Cities, and the Healthy Livers, Healthy Lives coalition, all of which focus on translating research into policy and community action for liver health.
