Professor Roger Reddel is a medical oncologist and molecular geneticist at the University of Sydney, serving as the Sir Lorimer Dods Professor and Director of the Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI). He leads the Cancer Research Unit at CMRI and co-founded the Australian Cancer Research Foundation International Centre for the Proteome of Human Cancer (ProCan). His work focuses on telomere biology, particularly telomerase and the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT) mechanisms, which are critical for cancer cell immortality.
Reddel's research has established ALT as a major telomere maintenance pathway in human cancers, responsible for >95% of immortalisation. His team identified ALT-specific PML bodies for diagnostic applications and a molecular marker for ALT activity. Current projects include proteomic assays for cancer diagnostics, ALT mechanism repression studies, and translational work through ProCan.
- Developed the C-circle assay for ALT detection
- Cloned human telomerase catalytic subunit hTERT
- First to demonstrate telomerase's role in malignant transformation
Scientific awards include the Ramaciotti Medal (2007), NSW Premier's Award (2011), and Neil Hamilton Fairley Medal (2017). He was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (2021) for contributions to cancer research.
Reddel's recent work emphasizes large-scale proteomics in cancer clinics through ProCan, characterizing ALT pathways in sarcomas and brain tumors, and developing multi-omic integration tools for precision oncology.
